Estonia is, for better or worse, defined by its relationship to Russia. One of the Baltic states created after the collapse of the Soviet Union, it has consistently feared aggressive action both overt and covert from its neighbour (and with good reason) – and as a historically loud voice against Russia, is now shouting louder than ever and having a ‘moment’ on the global stage.
Estonia certainly likes to present itself as a fastgrowing and forward-thinking nation, a model of the ‘new EU’ standard – but this only tells half of the story.
