There is a strong argument that Poland is currently ‘pushing its luck’ as far as remaining a liberal democracy is concerned. The gauntlet was officially thrown down in October of 2021 when Poland’s supreme court openly declared that elements of EU law were incompatible with Poland’s constitution and indicated that the treaties could not take precedence over international law. Given that this took place concurrently to ongoing discussions over a €57bn Euro recovery plan, of which Poland was in desperate need, and yet went ahead with declaring domestic primacy in direct contravention of the signed treaties anyway, the strength of feeling among the Polish political elite clearly ran high.
